A Very Special Acknowledgment for Chile

Our restaurants in the region continue to receive honors for our Company’s initiatives to protect the environment. Most recently, the Chilean Ministry of Environment certified six of our restaurants in the Fifth Region of Viña del Mar with the #ChaoBombillas seal, due to our commitment to eliminate the use of plastic straws.

The campaign carried out by the Chilean government under the slogan “No straws, please”, was launched to discourage plastic consumption in the country. It acknowledges people and companies that decide to replace single-use straws with reusable or sustainable options. In addition, it suggests reserving these alternatives for people who really need them, such as children, elderly people or people with different abilities.

In order to reduce plastic consumption at our restaurants, in 2018 we began to provide straws only to customers who expressly requested them. As a result of our “Plastic Straws upon Request” project, we eliminated the use of 2 million straws each month in Chile only. This has been implemented in all Latin American markets and we have managed to reduce plastic consumption by 200 tons so far.

The “Plastic Straws upon Request” initiative was launched as part of the global goals set by our Company so we can be part of the solution to the great environmental challenges our planet is facing. To take on these challenges, we are committed to taking action at every link in our supply chain, for example by supporting the purchase of sustainable meat and incorporating packaging from renewable, recycled or certified sources.

At Arcos Dorados we’re proud to receive the #ChaoBombillas honor and we have taken on the responsibility of using our scale to keep raising awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and generating positive changes beyond our restaurants.
